Posters promoting our collaborative MAFA Exhibitions

Presentation, Methods, Context

Helping curate and organise our two MAFA Exhibitions at Copeland Gallery and Camberwell College of Arts/South London Gallery was an invaluable, useful, and exciting experience.  Taking place on the 24th-27th June, Camberwell’s Interim show, ‘Unmute’ involved the organisation of nearly 90 works. This multitude of interdisciplinary practises all being exhibited collectively required the ability to work flexibly as part of a team and under highly pressured environments. Having been involved in the production of multiple proposals and curatorial exhibitions in various site-specific areas, such as Inverness, Dunbar, and Edinburgh Fire Station, I am aware of the importance of an artwork and its conceptual, aesthetic relationship to its environment. Exhibiting my botanical, bioluminescent painting ‘Electric Lines’ in an interactive space of varying dimensions and construction brought an entirely new perspective and life to the work. Interacting with sculptural floor installations of earthy tones further highlighted my paintings hyperpigmented, imposing visual qualities.

Having also exhibited at Camberwell College of Arts Graduate Showcase (10th -17th September), I was able to better understand the ergonomics of presenting within a space of specific dimensions and characteristics. Exhibiting my painting ‘Florere’ (120cmx160cm) beside works of a similar soft, sensual, and organic content (such as with Reda’s practice) compliments and underlines the ecofeminist subject matter of flora and this implicit depiction of an ‘artful sophistication of seduction’. Inspired by environmental photographer Henry J Fair, who exhibited his works on opposing walls, positioned behind and next to each other, I intend to create an unusual staging of displayed paintings to create an interactive space. This will hopefully trigger and encourage ongoing dialogue on our carbon footprint between visitors, scientists, and environmental experts. In future collaborative and independent exhibitions, such as my upcoming exhibition at R.A.R.O, I will consider a lateral presentation when displaying my organic, ecofeminist pieces. Viewed in this horizontal manner creates a metaphorical botanical dialogue linking paint, print and digital collage together for audiences to experience.
