Artist Statement:

My work focuses on exploring the cyclical, self-renewing and metaphorical qualities of the organic. I consider the formalization of flora, its expansive visual language and symbolism. Translating micrographic botanical imagery on a large scale, I assimilate plant to body. I use an intuitive painting style that builds a malleable sense of space and form. Utilising Abstract Expressionist processes of removal, soak staining, layering and stencilling, my botanical, ecofeminist works embrace a sense of chance and accentuate paint’s musical and visceral qualities.

My practice identifies a connection between the exploitation and degradation of the natural world and the subordination and oppression of women. Employing a ‘toxicity of colour’ I allude to a ‘manipulated landscape’ of highly cultured flowers and genetically modified plants; reflecting the anthropogenic impact humans have on nature and contemporary cultures obsession with preserving youth and beauty. Influenced by ‘Eccentric Abstraction’ and forms of ‘Expanded Painting’, my work discusses gendered forms, sensuous experience and the use of materiality to evoke meaning. Using luminous and iridescent hues replicated from the natural world, I consider the hyper-intelligence and otherworldliness of nature, specifically aquatic botany and its relationship to the anthropomorphic. I aim to achieve an immersive and sensual visual language of ‘dreamlike fluorescence’ through colour-field techniques, highlighting nature's ethereal, fantastical, ‘sublime’ qualities.
